The Bioinformatics Group of the Molecular Epidemiology Unit is a specialized bioinformatics unit focused on infectious diseases at IMTAvH. Our objectives are 1) to generate knowledge from molecular epidemiology studies and assist in outbreak surveillance to understand population genetics and pathogen evolution, 2) to strengthen human resources trained in bioinformatics analysis (users of genomic analysis software), and 3) to develop basic and advanced bioinformatics courses. This is important because infectious diseases are a public health problem in Peru, mainly in poor regions. Bioinformatics is a practical tool that helps generate knowledge, particularly about the evolution of diseases. The research carried out by our group can meet the growing need for bioinformatics in scientific projects in Peru and consolidate a lasting bioinformatics training system. This can also benefit multiple research units in different fields.
