The Marine Biology Laboratory maintains an inventory of fish and marine invertebrate species found along the Peruvian coastline, characterizing their biogeography with a special emphasis on the tropical north. To date, more than 100 new records have been obtained for the country and numerous new species for science, 14 of which have already been published. The samples are deposited in the Aquatic Zoology Collection (CZA), which houses around 1,000 species of macroinvertebrates from the Peruvian sea. A database of the collection is being created, including habitat and biogeography data. Support is being provided for the process of creating the Peruvian Tropical Sea National Reserve. A database of Peru's marine biodiversity is being developed to monitor the responses of biological communities to climate change, extreme El Niño events, and direct human impact. In addition, the populations of scallops in Peru are being genetically studied. Since October 2019, pilot studies have been conducted on the diversity of benthic microorganisms in coastal wetlands, such as Poza La Arenilla, opening up a new line of research on benthic microfauna and meiofauna in coastal marine environments. A line of research on biodiversity genetics has also been initiated.
