Laboratory of Molecular Microbiology

The Molecular Microbiology Laboratory carries out projects that focus on infectious diseases from an epidemiological, molecular, and immunological perspective. Lines of research include projects on enteric diseases caused, for example, by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) or respiratory infections such as those caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We seek to understand the mechanisms of bacterial pathogenicity and the mechanisms of resistance/protection by the host. Recently, the laboratory has joined the national effort to develop and validate SARS-Cov-2 detection kits. Its importance lies in the fact that our unit addresses problems that affect the public health of our population and globally, especially children and vulnerable populations, from a scientific, technological, and academic perspective, offering biotechnological solutions. Our research focuses on the area of infectious diseases, the results of which are published in various national and international indexed journals, in conjunction with the Infectious Diseases Research Laboratory (LIEI) and international collaborators. As part of our research projects, we involve students from different undergraduate and graduate programs at UPCH and other universities through internships or rotations and thesis writing, thus contributing to the training of young researchers.
