The Molecular Biotechnology and Cell Signaling Unit is made up of professionals from the fields of human health, veterinary medicine, biology, and biotechnology. Research is conducted in the areas of molecular genetics, population genetics, evolutionary genetics, genomics, and immunogenetics. Development of new biological technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Research is conducted on human genetic variability associated with infections and adaptation to altitude, alpaca genomics linked to the generation and application of genetic markers (SNPs) associated with productive traits (microsatellites, SNPs, DNA sequences), and the generation of single-chain immunoglobulins. The Unit has facilities for the development of solid-phase genomic tests such as DNA microarrays and recombinant protein production. In addition, biotechnological products have been developed for serological diagnosis (diagnostic tests for human and bovine hepatic fascioliasis and sarcocystosis in alpacas); genetic testing for paternity, kinship, identity, and traceability of domestic species (South American camelids), bacterial identification, and molecular diagnosis of pathogens (Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Escherichia coli, Fasciola hepatica, etc.).
