The Parasitic Diseases of the Nervous System Research Unit conducts research, diagnostic, clinical, and epidemiological studies and develops the Western Blot diagnostic test for cysticercosis and hydatid disease. The research unit develops projects related to neuroparasitic diseases, mainly cysticercosis. This disease is one of the main causes of epilepsy in Peru, where it has been found that 30% of epilepsy cases can be attributed to this parasitic infection. There is also a subarachnoid form with a mortality rate of approximately 10% and high morbidity, often resulting in disability. It is also important to note that cysticercosis can cause lifelong epilepsy in some patients because the brain parasites end up as small calcifications that are lifelong epileptogenic foci in patients. All these areas, among others, need to be investigated to improve patients' quality of life.
