The HTLV-1 Research Unit studies the epidemiological, clinical, immunological, virological, and genetic aspects related to the virus. It is a multidisciplinary group committed to researching a neglected and complex infection such as human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1). HTLV-1 is an endemic infection in Peru. It is estimated that approximately 2% of the Peruvian population could be infected with this virus. Although it has been almost 30 years since HTLV-1 was first associated with diseases such as adult T-cell lymphoma/leukemia and tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-1-associated myelopathy, it is still unknown why some people develop these diseases while the majority remain asymptomatic throughout their lives.
