The Pediatric Infectious Diseases Research Unit is dedicated to the study of infectious diseases prevalent in children, focusing on their epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Its main interest is the protective factors in breast milk, with an emphasis on the study of the antimicrobial properties of lactoferrin, protective antibodies, and oligosaccharides in colostrum and mature milk. They study enteric pathogens prevalent in children, with special attention to diarrheagenic E. coli and, more recently, the role of the intestinal microbiome. Additionally, they study the epidemiology of pneumococcus at the local and national levels, focusing on the determination of serotypes, antibiotic resistance, and virulence factors. Another of its activities is the study of neonatal infections, such as neonatal sepsis, herpes, Zika, and TORCHS. The group conducts epidemiological, clinical, basic science, molecular diagnostic methods, and clinical trials. Its importance lies in its specialization in clinical and basic science research on infections prevalent in the pediatric population, contributing to the generation and dissemination of knowledge that aids in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of these diseases. The laboratory's strength lies in its large network of national and international collaborators and , which enables the development of competitive projects of local and global relevance. In addition, the laboratory seeks to create learning and training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students from different fields related to health sciences (medicine, biology, medical technology, nutrition, etc.), especially for the completion of their theses and research projects.
