Organization profile

The Leishmaniasis and Malaria Unit (ULM) aims to provide solutions for the diagnosis and treatment of leishmaniasis and malaria (both diseases within the group of neglected diseases), as well as to understand the social and cultural aspects that allow the perpetuation of the endemicity of both diseases. The knowledge we generate is geared toward the prevention and control of both diseases in endemic populations, which are usually poor and rural. The research work carried out is multidisciplinary and collaborative with other institutions and researchers globally and within the country, and the UPCH. This approach has allowed us to integrate scientists dedicated to basic sciences (molecular biology, genetics, immunology, etc.) with scientists working in epidemiology, clinical practice, and the social components of these diseases. In addition, the ULM carries out ongoing teaching work, training numerous professionals and technicians from MINSA and other research centers in the country and abroad. The ULM is also a center for the diagnosis and treatment of leishmaniasis, working in conjunction with MINSA's Health Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Metaxenic Diseases and the HCH.
