The mission of the Clinical Mycology Unit is to provide mycological diagnostic services to patients at the Cayetano Heredia National Hospital and to all those referred from other hospitals in the country, to train national or international health personnel upon request and UPCH health science students, as well as to conduct research in the specialty with the participation of highly trained human resources and using new technologies. Since 2005, the Clinical Mycology Laboratory has successfully passed the performance evaluations of the American College of Pathologists for Indian ink tests, latex agglutination for Cryptococcus neoformans, and yeast identification, and since 2010 for in vitro sensitivity tests for yeasts. The areas of research are related to the epidemiology of candidiasis and cryptococcosis, the detection of yeast and Aspergillus fumigatus resistance to antifungals in the Peruvian population, and the antifungal activity of plant-derived products. Its importance lies in the fact that it conducts research with the aim of gaining knowledge about the epidemiology of fungal diseases, which in turn will be used for the early detection of the disease and to search for techniques that will enable sensitive and rapid diagnosis. Clinical studies are also conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of new antifungal agents and existing ones that have not yet been evaluated in specific fungal diseases, especially orphan diseases.
