Organization profile

The Antimicrobial Resistance Unit is made up of a multidisciplinary team of doctors, biologists, and technologists dedicated to the study of antimicrobial resistance and its mechanisms in bacteria that are important to human health. They study the epidemiology and mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in nosocomial and community pathogens. They work in collaboration with various national and international institutions and are interested in collaborative and multidisciplinary work in areas of interest. Its importance is based on the fact that antimicrobial resistance is a public health problem because it reduces the chances of effective treatment of infections, prolongs the duration of illness, and forces the use of expensive, toxic, or highly selective drugs, in addition to lengthening hospitalization time and increasing mortality. The unit conducts research focused on this problem at both the community and hospital levels, using phenotypic and molecular methods. It also evaluates the spread of major pathogens and their resistance genes to contribute epidemiological data that will help make better decisions and propose effective actions in the fight against antimicrobial resistance.
