The Virology Unit conducts research on arboviruses using molecular and bioinformatic tools to contribute to the development of new and improved diagnostic techniques that can be used in low-resource settings (points of care). To this end, the laboratory collaborates with national and international entities. Studies of Arbovirus Infections - Humans This area of research seeks new options for molecular and serological diagnosis of arbovirus infections in humans. This research is conducted in collaboration with the Virology Unit of the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp. We also seek to implement metagenomic sequencing on the Oxford Nanopore (ONT) minION platform and evaluate the potential impact of this technology on standard clinical diagnosis and care, pathogen surveillance, and public health. - Primates In this area, the Unit expanded its research into the detection of arboviruses and other infectious agents (herpesvirus, tuberculosis, Plasmodium) in primates rescued from illegal trafficking or in captivity, for which it has established a collaboration with the National Forest and Wildlife Service (SERFOR).
