Personal profile

With a degree in medicine and surgery, a diploma in university administration (UPCH), a master’s degree in public health, a certificate in international health, and a Ph.D. in epidemiology (University of California, Berkeley), I joined Cayetano Heredia University as a senior professor of public health in 2001. At this university, between 2005 and 2008, I served as associate dean of the School of Public Health; in 2015, I founded and assumed the directorship of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Sexuality, AIDS, and Society (CIISSS); between 2019 and 2021, I served as a Member of the Court of Honor and also as an Officer of Scientific Integrity; and between May 2021 and May 2026, I served as Vice Rector for Research. Since 2025, I have been a member of the Center for Research and Action on Equity (CIAEQ).

In addition, from 2007 to 2010, I served as president of the International Association for the Study of Sexuality, Culture, and Society; from 2010 to 2014, I served as the Latin American representative on the Governing Board of the International AIDS Society; from 2021 to 2024, I represented private universities on the Board of Directors of PROCIENCIA; and from 2018 to the present, I have been a member of the Board of Directors of the Network of the Americas for Health Equity (RAES). I have also served as a member of PAHO’s Technical Advisory Committee on HIV and WHO’s Strategic and Technical Advisory Committee on HIV. Over the past 30 years, I have provided technical assistance to a range of national and international organizations, including WHO, PAHO, UNAIDS, UNESCO, UNDP, UNFPA, USAID, and the Ministries of Health of Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru.

I have three decades of research experience, which has focused primarily on the epidemiology and prevention of HIV and STIs; sexual health, sexuality, and gender; and, more recently, on public health policy, social determinants of health, bioethics, and the right to health within a human rights framework; as well as on COVID-19 from an epistemological and sociological perspective. Most of my research involves international collaborations (UCSF, UCB, USC, UoW, JHU, UoL, UCL, ICL, Fiocruz, UNSW, WHO). I am a member of the International Advisory Boards of journals such as AIDS, JIAS, IJSH, CHS, SRSP, and Sexualidade.

In September 2021, I was awarded the Order of Cayetano Heredia in the rank of Grand Officer; in 2024, I was named a Distinguished Researcher by CONCYTEC and elected to the National Academy of Medicine; and in 2025, I received an Award of Merit from the Medical Association of Peru.
