He investigates the relationship between the genotype of the Leishmania parasite and the clinical manifestations of leishmaniasis (pathogenicity and virulence). His study of genomic polymorphism and gene expression has enabled him to develop molecular tools for the diagnosis of American tegumentary leishmaniasis and the monitoring of chemotherapy. In recent years, he has expanded his research to include the search for candidate immunoprophylactic molecules and active ingredients found in natural products. He conducts this research as part of an international multidisciplinary team.
