Pediatrician specializing in pediatric infectious diseases, Full Professor of Pediatrics at Cayetano Heredia University (UPCH) in Peru, and Full Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Texas in Houston, USA. Head of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Research Unit (INFECTOPED), member of the Laboratory of Enteric Diseases, Nutrition, and Antimicrobial Resistance (LEEN-RA), and former director of the Alexander von Humboldt Institute of Tropical Medicine (IMTAvH). Her main areas of research are: (1) Enteric pathogens associated with diarrhea in children, with a special emphasis on the study of the virulence and pathogenesis of diarrheagenic E. coli. (2) Protective factors in breast milk, particularly the antimicrobial and immunomodulatory effects of lactoferrin in pediatric infections such as diarrhea and neonatal sepsis. (3) Study of respiratory pathogens, particularly the epidemiology of pneumococcus at the regional level. (4) Neonatal and congenital infections, with a focus on neonatal sepsis, Zika, and GBS. (5) Childhood malnutrition, clinical studies, and community intervention. He has over 180 indexed publications on these topics.
A researcher with extensive experience in the management and implementation of projects in basic science, clinical and epidemiological studies, and pediatric clinical trials. She has received funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Gates Foundation’s Grand Challenge Exploration Grant, the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECID), Belgian Cooperation, and the Fund of the Americas (FONDAM), among others.
