Abstract

The aim of the present study was to identify gastrointestinal helminthes in rats of Metropolitan Lima, Peru and to quantify the frequency of infection, highlighting the results of those zoonotic helminth of interest. For this, 53 Rattus rattus and 20 Rattus norvegicus were captured in five urban areas. The gastrointestinal tracts were processed by the Travassos technique and the stools were evaluated by direct observation in the microscope. The frequency of helminthes in R. rattus was 77.4% and in R. norvegicus was 100%. In R. rattus were identified three species of cestoda: Hymenolepis diminuta (39.6%), Rodentolepis fraterna (7.5%) and Raillietina demerariensis (7.5%), six species of nematodes: Gongylonema neoplasticum (41.5%), Heterakis spumosa (13.2%), Syphacia muris (11.3%), Strongyloides ratti (15.1%), Aspiculuris tetraptera (11.3%) and Protospirura chanchanensis (3.8%), and one species of acanthocephalan: Moniliformis moniliformis (32.1%). In R. norvegicus were identified two species of cestodes: Hymenolepis diminuta (55%) and Rodentolepis fraterna (5%), three species of nematodes: Gongylonema neoplasticum (75%), Heterakis spumosa (65%) and Strongyloides ratti (45%), and one species of acanthocephalan: Moniliformis moniliformis (35%). The results indicate that Moniliformis moniliformis and Hymenolepis diminuta were the most frequent parasitic zoonotic agents in rats.
