Abstract

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a parasitic infection caused by Taenia solium, which poses a significant public health challenge due to its complex presentation and widespread prevalence. While traditionally endemic in developing countries, NCC has also emerged as a concern in developed nations, largely due to migration. This infection primarily affects the central nervous system, leading to a range of clinical manifestations, including epilepsy, intracranial hypertension, and various neurological symptoms, depending on the location and severity of the cysts; the diverse presentation of the disease is influenced by multiple factors, including the parasite's characteristics, the host's immune response, and environmental conditions, such as access to diagnostic tools and effective treatment options. As such, the management of NCC requires an individualized approach, though general guidelines exist for treatment. Despite significant advances in understanding the disease, challenges persist in its diagnosis, treatment, and prevention; research into non-invasive, point-of-care diagnostic tools is essential to improve detection, particularly in rural and remote regions where the disease burden is greatest, development of vaccines and enhanced immunodiagnostic tests holds promise for improving disease control. Ongoing research is focused on elucidating the interactions between Taenia solium and the immune system, as well as refining treatment protocols to minimize long-term neurological sequelae and improve patient outcomes.
