Infections represent an important cause of morbidity for travelers, Latin American countries are among the most frequent destinations for them. Malaria and traveler's diarrhea are the most frequently reported diseases, but Latin America is important for the transmission of yellow fever, dengue, leishmaniasis, hepatitis A, hepatitis B and sexually transmitted diseases. Malaria remains an important disease for travelers; about 7% of the traveler's malaria in the world, per year, are acquired in South America, and 40-60% are caused by Plasmodium falciparum. Advice for travelers should include vaccinations, individual protective measures and chemoprophylaxis, tailored to their special destinations. Special problems are posed by the travelers who present with diseases after having returned home.
